The Little Town of Mayer

Near the center of Arizona, in the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains, lies the small, unincorporated town of Mayer. Mayer is approximately 73 miles northwest of Phoenix, Arizona and 26 miles southeast of Prescott, Arizona. Located 10 miles east, Arcosanti, is an experiment in constructing a functioning example of an alternative urban landscape. The area also includes Cordes Lakes, Spring Valley, Poland Junction, and Arcosanti. Mayer sits at an elevation of 4,400 feet. As of 2014, Mayer’s population is 675 people.

Mayer, Arizona was founded in 1881 by Joseph Mayer of New York who made his first projects building a stage station, his home, and a restaurant. Then he established the Wells Fargo Express from Phoenix, Arizona which became a regular stop at the station. There are still a few of the original buildings standing and in use today. The Mayer Apartments, Mayer Business Block, and Mayer Red Brick Schoolhouse.

Mayer contains 2 public schools which both belong to Mayer Unified School District, Mayer Elementary School and Mayer High School. Mayer offers a range of community facilities including a library, a recreation center, a park, a Senior Center, Catholic Social Services, and many athletic facilities such as football and baseball fields, a basketball/tennis court and two gyms.

Located nearby is Prescott National Forest with such attractions as abandoned frontier towns along Turkey Creek. Horse Thief Basin Lake is a summer vacation resort area in a cool mountain setting. Other attractions include former gold camps and ghost towns, such as Jerome. The area offers a number of cabins and dude ranches, such as Foothills Ranch. The Foothills Ranch has been family owned and operated for over 14 years! Their wranglers have years of experience with good quality horsemanship skills. They are well known for providing folks with the best horseback riding in the area. Head on over to Foothills Ranch and experience the beauty and excitement of exploring the historic Bradshaw Mountain’s for yourself! Other activities for you and your family to enjoy would include fishing at Lynx Lake, and hunting for antelope, deer, turkey, and javalina. Two popular activities are rock hunting and gold panning in streambeds and washes.

The first weekend in May the town of Mayer celebrates its founding. It is called Mayer Daze. The celebration includes a parade, barbecue, library book sale, cake walk, craft booths, and games for the whole family!
