Chino Valley, AZ

“Big Sky Country”

Chino Valley is a town in Yavapai County. According to the 2014 census, the population of the town is 10,817. The town is in north-central Arizona, on state Highway 89, 15 miles north of Prescott and 35 miles south of Ash Fork, which is on Interstate 40. Chino Valley is at an elevation of about 4,750 feet.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 63.4 square miles, all of it land.

The town of Chino Valley was incorporated in 1970.

Chino Valley is the site of the first Territorial Capital of Arizona. The capital moved to Prescott, 15 miles away, in 1864. U.S. Army Cavalry Lt. Amiel W. Whipple, gave the community its name, while traveling through the area in 1854. “Chino” is the Spanish name for the abundant curly grama grass growing in the area.

In 1895, a narrow gauge branch of the United Verde and Pacific Railroad to Jerome, joining the Santa Fe, Prescott, and Phoenix Railway, was completed, and Jerome Junction was established. In 1923, the activities of Jerome Junction were absorbed by Chino Valley.

Chino Valley has a mild climate and a gentle four seasons. They enjoy 300 plus days of sunshine every year, and have an average rainfall of 10.6 inches.

Although Chino Valley may be small there is still quite a bit to offer! Chino Valley has several small shopping centers including a major supermarket, hardware stores, feed stores, drug store, veterinarians and a variety of other services. Take a short drive to several nearby retail districts offering a wide selection of goods and services.

The Aquatic Center, which opened in the summer of 2005 offers exercise classes, how-to-swim classes, a water slide and open swimming. The Aquatic Center is part of the 37-acre Community Center Park, which includes ball fields and a skate park. Other recreational activities in the area include tennis courts, golf range, hiking and horseback riding trails.

The Senior Center serves Chino Valley’s retired population. Daily lunches are served and Meals on Wheels is available for those who need it. There is always fun to be had at the center with such activities as ceramics, exercise classes, dancing, bus trips, fabric painting, needle crafts and potluck dinners.

Local dining options are numerous and varied, catering to a variety of budgets and tastes. From fast food to family dining, there is something that is sure to please every palate. Establishments include Aroma Pizza, Big Daddy E’s BBQ & Catering, Bonn-Fire Chillin’ and Grillin’, Casa Grande Mexican Restaurant, The Checkered Apron Bakery and Café, Gabby’s Kitchen and Overflow Coffee.

Wine-tasting, fresh food and live entertainment can be found year-round at Granite Creek Vineyards in Chino Valley, selected as one of Arizona’s 50 best places to visit. Granite Creek was the first farm in Arizona to be Certified Organic and today is one of only a handful of wineries in the United States that makes Certified Organic Wines without any added sulfites. Every Saturday afternoon from April through November, visitors can taste an array of Award-Winning wines and order lunch or dinner from the seasonally-inspired menu, all while listening to live music from some of Arizona’s best musicians.

The Chino Valley Unified School District # 51 represents four school facilities.

Del Rio Elementary (constructed in 1982) houses First through Fourth Grade students.

Territorial Elementary (constructed in 1999) houses our Kindergarten students.

Heritage Middle School embraces the true middle school concept for Fifth through Eighth graders, and last but not least located in the center of town is Chino Valley High School.

The District operates under the supervision of a five member Governing Board and one District Superintendent. The District presently employs 210 administrative, certified and support staff.

Chino Valley schools have won many awards including National Blue Ribbon, the State Champion on the Presidential Physical Fitness program, and they are designated a State Fine Arts Site.
